Abstract

This contribution presents the results of a study that interprets in-between spaces as a modular system which structures space, relationships, and urban dynamics from a climate perspective. The aim is to demonstrate the positive contribution that technological-environmental design can offer in the context of redevelopment and new construction of the urban fabric, concerning the ecological performance of the entire urban system, particularly from the perspective of decarbonisation and climate mitigation. Within this research, a methodology for classifying and analysing in-between spaces was developed, as well as a method for evaluating the reduction of climate-altering emissions. The paper compares six case studies that represent the three identified categories of in-between spaces, evaluating them through the criteria of Naturalness, Proximity and Circularity and in relation to the six strategic axes of Green Cities.

Fabrizio Tucci, ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome (Italy)

Full Professor of Architecture Technology, he is the Director of the Department of Planning, Design, Technology of Architecture (PDTA), the Director of the II-level Master’s in environmental Technological Design and Coordinator of the Environmental Technological Design Curriculum of the PDTA PhD Program. With 25 years of experience as a Scientific Director for national and international projects and research, he is the Coordinator of the States General of the Green Economy in Architecture and the International Experts Group of the Green City Network.

Paola Altamura, ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome (Italy)

Architect and PhD, she is a Researcher at the PDTA Department. A former Research Fellow at ENEA in the Laboratory Resources Valorization, she carries out research and experimentation on the ecological effectiveness of interventions on the built environment with a focus on circularity, resource efficiency and decarbonisation.

Maria Michaela Pani, ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome (Italy)

Architect and PhD Candidate at the PDTA Department, she holds a Master’s Degree in Valorisation and Enhancement of Small Historical Centres. Her research focuses on the role of in-between spaces from the perspective of city sustainability and strategies aimed at climate neutrality in urban districts.
