Abstract

Il saggio illustra come i progettisti stiano promuovendo una straordinaria doppia convergenza tra il mondo naturale e quello artificiale. Dopo secoli di conflitti, la realtà dell’Antropocene e l’impellenza del cambiamento climatico ci spingono a concentrare i nostri sforzi verso una integrazione tra l’ambiente e le creazioni dell’uomo – in un contesto in cui le tecnologie digitali e l’Internet of Things possono fornirci strumenti operativi. La prima faccia della medaglia – trasformare il mondo naturale in un ‘cyborg’ potenziato artificialmente – ha già guadagnato slancio e influenza culturale. L’altra – animare il mondo artificiale perché funzioni in armonia con la natura e gli esseri viventi – rappresenta un percorso sul quale abbiamo appena mosso i primi passi. Con lo studio di progettazione CRA – Carlo Ratti Associati, attraverso mostre e sperimentazioni sviluppate a livello internazionale, spesso in collaborazione con Italo Rota, abbiamo esplorato due strategie principali per ‘animare l’artificiale’: attraverso la computazione o attraverso l’incorporazione di elementi naturali nel progetto. Le nostre teorie derivano della pratica quotidiana e a loro volta chiamano in causa nuovi scenari politici, ecologici ed evoluzionistici attraverso i quali poter comprendere al meglio il compito che ci attende.

Design Editor, è laureato presso lo Strelka Institute a Mosca (Russia) ed è stato curatore esecutivo della VIII Bi-City, Biennale di Urbanistica/Architettura di Shenzhen. È partner dello studio di design e innovazione CRA – Carlo Ratti Associati.
