Abstract

Si stima che ogni anno 60 miliardi di chili di tessuti e calzature usati vengano bruciati o portati a discarica. Nonostante i Paesi africani – come il Kenya e la Nigeria – a livello mondiale contribuiscano in misura non rilevante al totale dei rifiuti tessili, il loro consumo di tessuti è in crescita. Un maggior consumo sollecita un’adeguata proposizione di idee e progetti che utilizzino le risorse tessili in modo non lineare e oltre il primo ciclo vita del materiale. In questo contesto si colloca Africa Collect Textiles fondata nel 2013 a Nairobi (Kenya), dove ha avviato con successo un modello aziendale per raccogliere e lavorare tessuti usati. A partire dalle ricerche sul campo a Lagos (Nigeria), e dalla consolidata esperienza a Nairobi, questo articolo discuterà i contesti, le potenzialità socio-culturali e le modalità economiche rilevanti per adattare e attuare un’iniziativa di raccolta e riciclo dei tessuti nell’Africa urbanizzata.

Moritz Kasper, Technische Universität di Dortmund (Germania)

attualmente con sede alla Technische Universität di Dortmund (Germania), è un Ricercatore e consulente con interesse per le realtà eterogenee e socio-tecniche del quotidiano urbano. Ha conseguito un Master in Urban Design e negli ultimi dieci anni si è impegnato in ricerche per Organizzazioni internazionali, ONG, Enti governativi in Europa e Africa.

Elmar Stroomer, ACT - Africa Collect Textiles Ltd

Esperto in design sostenibile, tecnologico e tessile, con interessi verso le economie emergenti e le innovazioni per i nuovi mercati. Ha conseguito un Master in Urban Design e nel 2013 ha fondato ACT in Kenya, prima di fondare uno studio per Design without Borders in Uganda e lavorare su progetti di product design nei Paesi Bassi.
